Seller Tips: Party Guests Aren’t the Only Things That Linger Past Their Welcome

If you’re listing your home during the holiday season, there are many great benefits. Serious buyers, less inventory, fabulous decor, etc. But one thing to keep in mind are those pesky holiday-feast odors that can turn off a potential buyer, leading to what could be a lump of coal in your stocking, instead of a signed purchase agreement.

Here are 4 helpful tips to to remove those stubborn holiday cooking odors that tend to linger past their welcome:

    Everything’s better with bacon?

    I. When cooking heavier items such as bacon, fish or curry, be sure to keep the bedrooms and closet doors shut. Why? These rooms are filled with fabrics which love to soak up cooking odors. And those odors love to linger.  You may not be sensitive to it, but those coming in from the outside, may be.

II. Oil splatters. Sauces pop. Water boils over. It happens to the best of us, but if we as-they-happen clean up these common cooking occurrences, odors that would love to hang behind, will be stopped in their tracks!

A little white vinegar may save the day

III. One of the best tips is to leave a bowl of white vinegar on the counter overnight. We don’t know exactly why this works, but it does. The next morning, any sign (or scent) of the prior evening’s feast, should be gone! This also works with coffee grounds.

    Williams Sonoma MULLING SPICES

IV. And finally, one that is perfectly suited for the holiday season, try simmering your favorite holiday spices. In a small saucepan, add spices and water, heat on low. In no time, your home will be filled with warmth and holiday cheer; and those naughty odors will be a thing of the past. (Please note: Be sure to watch the pan, the water can evaporate, quickly.)

Not sure what spices to use? We recommend “Mulling Spices” from Williams Sonoma, which you can sip (+bourbon), as well.

So, you see, there’s no need to cut back on the holiday feasting while selling your home; just be sure to follow these tips to keep your home in tip-top market ready shape!
